Gabourey Sidibe is an American film and television actress. She co-stars as “Becky Williams” on the Fox drama series Empire. Her film credit includes Tower Heist (2011), White Bird in a Blizzard (2014), and Grimsby (2016). She won an Oscar nomination for the drama film, Precious (2009). Sidibe was born on May 6, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York. She was raised in the neighborhood of Bedford–Stuyvesant. Her mother, Alice Tan Ridley, is an R&B singer, and her father, Ibnou Sidibe, a taxi driver. The two separated when she was young. She has a brother named Ahmed. Sidibe completed her associate’s degree at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). She studied psychology at Mercy College in New York City. She also took classes at The City College of New York.

CAREER
Prior to acting, Sidibe worked as a receptionist for the not-for-profit agency ‘The Fresh Air Fund’. Her acting debut was Lee Daniels’ drama film, Precious (2009). The film was based on the 1996 novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire. She was cast as the title character Claireece “Precious” Jones. The role earned her the Independent Spirit Award for the best female lead. She also received nominations for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. Sidibe was cast as a bully named “Latonya Williams” in Yelling to the Sky (2011). She was seen alongside Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy in the heist comedy, Tower Heist (2011). She appeared in 30 episodes of the Showtime series The Big C (2010-13).

Sidibe portrayed “Queenie” in the third season of American Horror Story (2013-14). She portrayed jazz singer “Ella Fitzgerald” on the Funny or Die web series, Drunk History ().
